Description

A moist and tender Chocolate Sheet Cake with a rich pour-over fudgy frosting that embodies the spirit of communal dining.


Ingredients

2 cups Granulated Sugar
1 cup Unsalted Butter
1/2 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
1/2 cup Buttermilk
2 Large Eggs
1 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 cup Boiling Water


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a standard 18×13-inch rimmed baking sheet
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and sugar until combined
  3. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in the cocoa powder and boiling water
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil for 30 seconds and remove from heat
  5. Pour the hot chocolate mixture over the flour and sugar, whisking until smooth
  6. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with the buttermilk, baking soda, and vanilla extract
  7. Gradually stir the buttermilk mixture into the chocolate batter
  8. Pour the batter onto the prepared baking sheet and spread evenly
  9. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clea
  10. While the cake bakes, prepare the frosting by melting butter with cocoa and milk in a saucepan, whisking in powdered sugar
  11. Pour the warm frosting over the cake immediately after it comes out of the ove

Notes

Use high-quality Dutch-process cocoa powder for best results.

Do not overbake, as sheet cakes can dry out quickly.

Pour frosting over the cake while it's still hot.
