Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a standard 18×13-inch rimmed baking sheet
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and sugar until combined
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in the cocoa powder and boiling water
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil for 30 seconds and remove from heat
- Pour the hot chocolate mixture over the flour and sugar, whisking until smooth
- In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with the buttermilk, baking soda, and vanilla extract
- Gradually stir the buttermilk mixture into the chocolate batter
- Pour the batter onto the prepared baking sheet and spread evenly
- Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clea
- While the cake bakes, prepare the frosting by melting butter with cocoa and milk in a saucepan, whisking in powdered sugar
- Pour the warm frosting over the cake immediately after it comes out of the ove
Notes
Use high-quality Dutch-process cocoa powder for best results.
Do not overbake, as sheet cakes can dry out quickly.
Pour frosting over the cake while it's still hot.
