Description

Crispy Amish Onion Fritters are golden, savory, and packed with tender onions. Perfect for a snack, side, or crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup cornmeal

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

3/4 cup milk or buttermilk

1 egg

Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

1. Thinly slice the onions and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and pepper.

3. Add milk and egg to the bowl. Stir until just combined.

4. Fold in the sliced onions. Let batter rest 5 minutes.

5. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.

6. Scoop batter into pan and flatten slightly.

7. Fry each side 2–3 minutes until golden brown.

8. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.

9. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Use sweet onions for a milder flavor.

Do not overcrowd the pan or fritters won’t crisp properly.

Best served immediately, but reheats well in an oven.
