Description
This recipe for Traditional BBQ Baked Beans captures the essence of an American summer with its smoky, rich aroma and complex flavors. It is a hearty comfort food that brings people together and can be enjoyed at gatherings or family dinners.
Ingredients
3 cups Navy Beans or Great Northern Beans
1/2 cup Blackstrap Molasses
2 teaspoons Smoked Paprika
2 tablespoons Stone-Ground Mustard
1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1 large Yellow Onion (finely diced)
4 cloves Garlic (minced)
1/4 cup Tomato Paste
3 tablespoons Maple Syrup
Cumin and Black Pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). In a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven, sauté the finely diced onions over medium heat until they become translucent and slightly golden. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant
- Stir in the tomato paste, molasses, apple cider vinegar, mustard, and maple syrup. Whisk the mixture together until it forms a smooth, bubbling liquid
- Add the smoked paprika, cumin, and black pepper. Stir well to ensure the spices toast slightly in the heat
- Gently fold in your cooked navy beans, ensuring every bean is coated in the sauce. If too thick, add half a cup of water or vegetable broth
- Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and place it in the oven. Bake for about 45 to 60 minutes
- Remove the lid during the last 15 minutes of baking to allow the sauce to thicke
- Let the beans sit for ten minutes after removing them from the oven before serving
Notes
Always use a heavy-bottomed pot to prevent burning.
If using dried beans, soak them overnight and simmer until tender first.
Adjust liquid to avoid dryness during baking.
